Listed building consent for Installation of a commemorative plaque
Installation of a commemorative plaque on the porch to the front facade of the Grade II Listed building
4D Planning were commissioned by the Ambassador of Ukraine to the United Kingdom to prepare a Listed Building Consent Application for the Installation of a commemorative plaque on the porch to the front facade of a Grade II Listed terraced building.
The property is a six storey building in the town house style. The property at 75 Cornwall Gardens was built as a residence in the Victorian era, and is currently in use as multiple flats, although between 1919 and 1921 it served as the first location for diplomatic relations between the United Kingdom and Ukraine.
The proposal is to install a plaque on the left pillar abutting the building, adjacent to the front door. This plaque would commemorate the establishment of relations between the United Kingdom and Ukraine from 1919 to 1921 at the building, on the approach to the 100th anniversary. The Royal Borough of kensington and Chelsea GRANTED Listed Building Consent for the works.
Installing a commemorative plaque to celebrate 100 years of diplomatic relations between Ukraine and the UK requires Listed Building Consent, even for the Ukrainian Embassy in London. This plaque will honor the historical significance of the building, which served as the first location for diplomatic relations between 1919 and 1921.
4D Planning assisted the embassy in preparing the application for Listed Building and advertisement consent. The application was submitted to the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea (RBKC), where discussions focused on the plaque's size and material to ensure compliance with local guidelines.
Given the building's Grade II listed status, it was crucial to address all aspects of Islington Council’s policies regarding alterations to listed properties. The approval process involved careful consideration of how the plaque would integrate with the existing architecture while preserving the building's historical character.
