4D Planning were instructed by the client to apply for planning permission for the change of use of the premises from a hair dressers / beauty salon to a tattoo studio (Use Class E) and for new signage to the shop front. The premises sits within a 4-5 storey terraced property located near the corner of Portpool Lane and Leather Lane. The property is Grade II listed and is within the Hatton Garden Conservation Area.
The applicant is an established tattoo artist with significant experience and having a notable client following. Between 5-7 professional tattooists will be employed at the premises, in addition to a manager and cleaner. The tattoo artists will be national and international artists with many customers to travel from afar for tattoos.
4D Planning produced the architectural drawings, planning documents including a strongly worded Design and Access / Planning Statement and Heritage Statement to address the usage, impacts on the environments and on the heritage asset (the listed property). The application was assessed by Camden Council and planning permission was granted. The signage was granted advertisement consent and the changes externally and internally to the listed building was approved as well.
Camden Council recently granted planning permission for a change of use of a premises to operate as a tattoo salon under Class E. This decision highlights the evolving landscape of urban planning and the increasing acceptance of creative businesses in traditionally commercial spaces.
Camden is renowned for its rich architectural heritage, which includes numerous listed buildings. A listed building application is essential when proposing changes to properties that hold historical significance. These applications ensure that any alterations respect the building's character and heritage. In this case, the property in question was subject to careful scrutiny to ensure compliance with local policies while accommodating the new business model. The process for listed building applications in Camden involves several steps, including detailed assessments by conservation officers and public consultations. This rigorous approach aims to balance development needs with the preservation of cultural heritage, ensuring that new businesses can thrive without compromising the historical integrity of the area.
